Dalhousie Medical School’s neuroscience researchers are known around the world for their major discoveries and contributions to finding cures for a wide range of diseases and injuries that affect the brain and nervous system. These include Alzheimer, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), spinal cord injury, stroke, eye diseases, schizophrenia, autism, and chronic pain.
Sadly, there is no cure for any of these diseases or conditions. Innovative treatments are needed to stop neurological diseases in their tracks, repair damage and restore lost function. The good news is that scientists at Dalhousie Medical School and other research institutions are learning more about the brain and nervous system every day. Better yet, they are getting closer to effective treatments and cures.
Molly Appeal donors have made major contributions to local neuroscience research, through the 2002 Molly Appeal in support of the Brain Repair Centre, and the 2006 Molly Appeal, which is fostering the next generation of researchers through the new Molly Neuroscience Traineeships.
